In many regions where NOVICA works with artisans, not all gender identities can be safely expressed. Over the years, we have shared stories of global artisans and staff who embrace their uniqueness openly, from Oscar Figueroa in small-town Mexico, to Fernando and David in Guatemala, to Michael Hockey in Indonesia, who reminds us: “LGBTQIA individuals living in other parts of the world face unimaginable challenges … and can be arrested, jailed, or even killed.”
At NOVICA, we believe that love, respect, and understanding are among humankind’s highest ideals, and that together we can help build a future in which love triumphs over adversity. We work towards that goal every day. “Times are changing,” notes artisan Fernando Angel Meza in Bali. “In the future, people will be appreciated for who they are, and what they contribute, regardless of gender, ethnicity, body size, etc. We’re all human beings. We should simply be treated as equals,” he adds. |
