In 1999 I moved from San Antonio to Los Angeles to help Roberto and Andy build NOVICA. We had grown up together, and I’d travelled internationally with their family when we were kids. Now we were young adults looking to make a positive difference in the world. When the call came to help co-found NOVICA, to turn a mission-driven idea into a high-functioning technology company, my answer was a fast “yes!” We three amigos are still steering the ship with love and passion, Roberto as CEO, Andy as COO, and me as CTO, along with Armenia Nercessian our beloved President, and changemaking family and friends around the world.
Our early days were all energy, urgency, and improvisation. I jumped in to oversee the technological buildout of NOVICA. Nothing like NOVICA existed. There was no global artisan marketplace in the sky. No roadmap. It was all late nights, tech innovation, logistical challenges for Andy, problem-solving on every front, and a growing team of Novicans around the world excited to devote their lives to doing good.
As soon as we could, we moved NOVICA’s tiny headquarters out of Roberto's basement apartment and into a tiny cottage off Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. We filled every inch of it. Desks were squeezed tightly together, cords ran everywhere, and somehow we made room for a foosball table. Because when you’re working all hours, creating 7 days a week, you need at least the occasional tournament.
On NOVICA’s 27th birthday this week, I recall our early days with a big smile. None of us got much rest, and the pace was relentless. Frankly, it still is. But we also have something rare that makes everything worthwhile. Today, with NOVICA connecting artisans to more than a million customers around the world, I am reminded that the best things are powered by people joining forces for good.
