I remember the moment my daughter Milena and future son-in-law Roberto came to me with the idea for NOVICA. I had spent my life working in human rights, serving as a United Nations Human Rights Officer, working extensively in conflict zones, helping people whose lives were uprooted by conflict, poverty, and injustice. I had no intention of stopping. But then Milena and Roberto shared his intriguing idea with me.
The more I listened, the more I understood that it could be a new way for me to help underserved communities — in this case artisan communities — earn sustainable income, and share their cultures with the world. After so many years working with people in crisis, I saw in NOVICA another path toward empowerment.
So I said yes. Soon I was helping oversee the establishment of our international offices, flying constantly between our hubs in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Those early years were intense and exhilarating. Everywhere we went and everywhere we go today, we meet artisans of extraordinary talent grateful for the opportunity to build a better future.
On NOVICA’s birthday, I am savoring the memory of that leap of faith. One filled with purpose, family, friendships, and determination. Today, when I see how far our mission has traveled, and how many thousands of people have been uplifted, I feel profound gratitude for our customers helping turn a brave idea into our global do-good family.
